Australian painter Eric Smith, achieved much fame with his award winning portraits (including three Archibald prize wins), landscapes and large abstracts, but that was some decades ago.

The artist had a successful exhibition twenty years ago. He has been preparing for his next one ever since.

Now pushing 90, this forgotten master is on a mission. Eric Smith wants to ‘go out with a bang, rather than a whimper.’

Twenty years in the making, filmed over two years, this documentary is an intimate and revealing insight into the artist at work, his great loves, his passion and his mortality.

With stunning cinematography intertwined with archival footage, this inspiring and uplifting film examines Eric Smith’s long career and his struggle to exhibit one last time.

Exploring the Australian art scene from the late fifties to contemporary times, the film includes interviews with John Olsen, Leonard French, Peter Sculthorpe, Barry Pearce, Lou Klepac, Rosemary Crumlin, Hendrik Kolenberg, Jon Dwyer and more.

More than an art film, this is a love story as Eric and wife Joy declare they are NOT FINISHED YET.

'To finish a work? To finish a picture? What nonsense!
To finish it means to be through with it, to kill it, to rid it of its soul,
to give it its final blow is the coup de grace for the picture,
as well as for the painter.'

- Pablo Picasso
